Even taking it through the process was a bit cathartic.” I did get involved in trying to take it further to the courts and I had a good team behind me who managed to prove the injury was down to bad teaching but I never pursued it fully. She said: “The muscles controlling my vocal chords stopped working much like an athlete suffers through sports injury. Unfortunately, Judith’s career was to be cut short early after she developed problems with the muscles in her voicebox, as a result of bad teaching. You peak when you are in your 30s and 40s in opera so I was still very young but hotly tipped.” She said: “I’d worked as a singer while at college and done work with people such as Scottish Opera doing choruses and covers as a sort of apprentice and then was accepted to do a high-level course at the RNCM in Manchester to take me to international level. Judith, who had been singing opera since the age of 15 and also played the violin and oboe at school, had been a rising star on the British circuit, graduating first at the RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire) in Scotland in 1991 before more training at the RNCM in Manchester. The weight gain happened between the ages of 27 and 29 after she realised she would be unable to pursue her chosen career in opera due to a vocal injury. She said: “I might have taken off the weight but I still feel like the fat girl I once was. It’s been almost 20 years since Edinburgh-born Judith wore size 22 clothes but the raven-haired presenter, who now weighs just under 10 stone, reckons fat is the one thing that will never shift from her brain.
